Chapter Seven

"No, that's two separate routes; he bought a ticket all the way to San Francisco. That is all they know right now. Their agent went out there to look for him."

"I'm going out there." She turned her horse around and headed home.

He was beside her again in an instant. "You don't have a clue where he is or if he made it all that way. Besides, San Francisco is a big city. You are not going out there. That is why your mother hired the agent and my man is looking into it as well. When they get out there, they will find him and send word, or your brother will."

"I just can't sit here and do nothing. We were very close. You don't understand. Something has to have happened. He has to be hurt." Tears flooded her eyes as she took a deep shuddering breath. Her horse slowed as she relaxed her heels.

"I do understand; my brother and I are very close, but there is nothing for you to do until we know more. Once we have information, I'll help you decide what to do, all right?"

Caroline didn't answer. They rode together in quiet companionship; the only thing breaking the silence was the clip-clop of their horse's hooves matching each other's pace along the lane. The occasional song of a cheerful jay would flutter through her mind, but mostly she was thinking of Preston. What in the world would take him to San Francisco? Had her brother ever mentioned that city to her before? What was she missing? She couldn't think of anything.

"It simply doesn't make sense. He wouldn't abandon us, he wouldn't. But, if he thought I was now happily married—I had set off to Colfax to be married, but changed my mind and came home, but if I would have stayed there, he wouldn't have abandoned Mother. And Mr. Hartley—" she paused and looked toward Royce again, remembering that Thaddeus Hartley was Mr. Thaddeus Hartley-Ashby, Royce's brother. She should like to ask Royce about the things her mother had spoken of, but of course, that simply wasn't something you asked. Perhaps it would come up another time. "Your brother said Preston knew of our circumstances, and he made a bank withdrawal and then disappeared. It simply makes no sense."

"It doesn't make any sense. I'm sorry. I wish I could cheer you." He reached for her hand. "Would you like to walk for a bit?" With his hand on hers, their horses were so close their legs brushed occasionally. Caroline was sure that people would be twittering about the indiscretion before she even made it home. No doubt her mother would have the news and press her about it by suppertime.

She knew, however, what many of the young innocent ladies in the park knew not – the pleasures of being a married woman. She missed the comfort of sleeping in the arms of the man she loved. At the concerned look on his observant face, she hurriedly said, "Oh, no.
